Commodity frontiers and the transformation of the global countryside: a research agenda

Abstract Over the past 600 years, commodity frontiers – processes and sites of incorporation resources into expanding capitalist world economy have absorbed ever more land, labour natural assets. In this paper, we claim that studying global history capitalism through lens using regimes as an analytical framework is crucial to understanding origins nature capitalism, thus modern world. We argue identify a process rooted in profound restructuring countryside nature. They connect extraction exchange with degradation, adaptation resistance rural peripheries. To account for enormous variety actors places involved critical challenge social sciences, one which can contribute insights.
